All Australians have health care rights. 

The Australian Charter of Health Care Rights explains our rights.  

We have the right to: 

  • get health care we need 
  • be safe when we get health care 
  • get respect from health workers 

We have the right to information we understand. 

It is important to know our health care rights.   

You can read this information on your own or with someone you trust. 

People with intellectual disability have health care rights, like everyone else. The Australian Charter of Health Care Rights says these rights. It is in Easy English, so that it is easy to understand.

The Australian Charter of Health Care Rights says that people with intellectual disability have the right to:

  • get health care that meets our needs
  • be safe when we get health care
  • get respect from health care workers
  • ask questions and make decisions about health
  • get information we can understand
  • keep our health information private
  • give feedback, like saying the health care was good or making a complaint.

It is important to know our health care rights. It means we can speak up if someone ignores our rights. It means we can make things fairer.
