People with intellectual disability:

  • have high rates of mental ill health compared to other Australians
  • are more likely to take medicines for a long time
  • face health risks because of this medicine.

The Department of Developmental Disability Neuropsychiatry (3DN) has made an e-learning course for health professionals. The course explains:

  •  the impact of intellectual disability on psychotropic medicines
  • how to safely prescribe to people with intellectual disability.

3DN has also made video podcasts about prescribing psychotropic medicine for:

  • adults with intellectual disability
  • children and adolescents with intellectual disability.

3DN is part of the National Centre of Excellence in Intellectual Disability Health.
